The Charity Cure
Tomorrow is GivingTuesday here in Canada. And iCash is so proud to announce it's involvement in the movement! Several years ago, the GivingTuesday phenomenon was launched and it has been growing steadily ever since. It comes every year on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And, to be quite honest, the frenzy and over-consumption of Black Friday and Cyber Monday always leave me feeling just a little bit “icky”. Don’t get me wrong, I participate fully in the shopping extravaganza and try to take advantage of as many deals as possible just like the next gal. But then, once all the purchases are done and the final bills are tallied, I am left with an awful “spending hangover” that I don’t enjoy. And I suspect I am not alone in that feeling.
Over the years, I have found that the best remedy for this icky-feeling spending hangover is to participate as much as I can in the GivingTuesday movement. And I cannot express how honored and proud I am to work for a company such as iCash that believes in giving back as much as I do. Starting tomorrow, iCash will donate 1$ for each person that creates an account (account creation is free with no obligation!) all day tomorrow! How generous is that!
So, now that the preamble is out of the way, and on the eve of GivingTuesday, here are a few reasons why giving to charity is a great idea.
1. Increase happiness:
Psychologists have released studies that clearly prove that giving to others actually increases your capacity for love and happiness. There is a moment of euphoria in the brain similar to that of when you are eating chocolate (or some other act that is a little too racy for this blog entry). With MRI data to prove the findings, researchers have discovered that the same portion of the brain responsible for pleasure cravings are satisfied when donating to charity. With this in mind, a great suggestion is to give to charity in smaller amounts but more often. This would, in essence, keep you happy throughout the year!
2. Feel richer:
The simple act of giving something to someone less fortunate makes you suddenly realize that you are richer than you think. When we live in our own financial bubbles, we sometimes think that we are worse off than we actually are. The moment that we donate some of what we have, we realize just how much we have. There is a philosophy that the more you realize you have, the more you open yourself up to receive more. It is a cycle of giving and receiving that makes for a harmonious balance.
3. Be a role model:
Donating to charity sets a beautiful example to those around us, especially children. Teaching children, right around Christmas time, that the season is about more than just getting gifts and toys. That it is also about sharing with others and helping those less fortunate whenever possible. You can involve your children in the choosing of a charity. They will enjoy the project more if they feel that they are participating. Plus, you will instill in them a desire to actively make the world a better, happier place.
Gratitude is actually listed as the #1 thing to cultivate within ourselves in order to find more happiness. Grateful people are happier people. And in donating to charity, the gratitude shoots through the roof! We become more grateful for all of the little things that we have taken for granted all year long. We have a roof over our heads, we live in a land of peace, we have access to clean water, we have families and friends, and the list goes on. Giving to people in need makes you realize just how blessed your life is, even with all of its problems!
5. Tax credit:
Who doesn’t want to reduce the amount of income tax they pay? Donating to charity is a great savings on taxes. Plus, you can carry forward the amounts you donate in order to wait until you have a sufficient amount to claim. So you can save even those small donation amounts until they add up to an amount that is worth your while!
All of the above-mentioned items are all great reasons to donate to charity. But the most important one remains that it just feels right. It restores a sense of balance to the frenzy of the holidays. It creates a sense of peace within. Whether you can afford to donate $5 or $500, or whether you prefer to donate your time and volunteer, the great feeling you will get will remain throughout the holidays and into the New Year. Tomorrow is GivingTuesday and iCash is proud to announce that it will be donating $1 for every new sign-up on the website. It won’t cost you anything and you will be just one step closer to achieving your charitable goals. So, sign up and get your friends and family to sign up so that we can collectively make a huge GivingTuesday impact!
