TOP SPRING CLEANING TIPS

The snow is melting, the birds are chirping, the tulips are slowly pushing their way through the earth, and you know what that means? It’s time for some SPRING CLEANING! It’s time to throw open the windows, breathe in some beautifully fresh air and get scrubbing!

Before grabbing that mop and those rags, take a minute to check out the iCASH.ca blog on the top tips on how to make your spring cleaning more efficient, more thorough, more cost-effective, and, best of all, more fun!

MORE EFFICIENT:

Spring cleaning is a huge job! In order to properly prepare for such an enormous undertaking, here are a few tips and tricks to help make the project much more manageable.

EFFICENCY TIP #1 - MAKE A SCHEDULE:

Walk around your home and assess which areas require a thorough cleaning. More often than not, people get caught up doing routine cleaning chores at the same time as spring cleaning chores, thereby increasing the time and effort required. Make a list of what areas of your house require a thorough spring cleaning and then stick to the list.

EFFICENCY TIP #2 – START AT THE TOP:

No one likes doing double the work. So, make sure, when you start your spring cleaning, you start at the top. If you are in a three-level home, start on the top floor. Whether in a multi-level home or in an apartment, make sure to start with the ceilings and ceiling fans before washing the floors. Then, let all the dust settle before turning your focus to the floors.

EFFICENCY TIP #3 – DON’T FORGET TO DE-CLUTTER:

Before commencing the deep clean of spring, “work smarter not harder” by taking a minute to get rid of any unwanted items lying around the house. De-cluttering your cleaning zones makes it easier to clean, makes the house seem neater, and has been proven to actually reduce stress. Sounds like a pretty efficient tip to us!

MORE THOROUGH:

Spring cleaning is all about getting to those oft-forgotten corners and much-neglected zones. But, once you get into the “spring cleaning” zone and start scrubbing those “oft-forgotten” areas, you start to see just how many there are! And how does one even start to clean them? And which ones are the most important? Not to worry, we have “de-cluttered” (get it?) all of the top tips on how to get the deepest, most thorough clean of all those “tough to reach” spots!

THOROUGH TIP #1 – CLEAN WHERE YOU COOK:

The microwave, fridge and oven are some of the most used appliances in the house, yet often get shown the least amount of cleaning love. But to get those caked on food stains requires elbow grease! … or does it? To thoroughly (and easily) clean the microwave, fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water, 1 cup of vinegar, and 3 tbsp of lemon juice. Microwave on high until the microwave window is steamy (approximately 2 minutes). Then simply, and easily, wipe down! Easy-peasy!

For the fridge, soaking the food drawers and shelves in warm, soapy water is the quickest and easiest way to clean and disinfect. Don’t forget to go through all of those little-used bottles and jars in the back and throw out any expired items!

And the oven is often the absolute easiest! Simply create a paste using about ½ cup of baking soda and 2-3 tbsp of water. Spread around the walls and door of the oven and allow to sit overnight. Wipe clean in the morning and VOILA! For a more detailed explanation, check out CookingLight’s tips for oven cleaning here.

THOROUGH TIP #2 – KIDS TOYS:

If you have kids, then you surely have that dreaded “bin” full of random plastic toys. And probably a pile of much-loved (and rarely washed) stuffed animals. With the momentum of spring cleaning at your back, it’s time to refresh these items and get them looking shiny and new! Those plastic toys can easily be tossed into the dishwasher on a quick-cycle (remember to skip the heat-dry cycle!) and most stuffed animals can be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and then left to air dry. And, in an effort to remain efficient, you can continue cleaning while those two appliances do their work!

THOROUGH TIP #3 – YOUR PHONE:

Did you know that your phone probably has more germs on it than your toilet? YOWZA! Your current deep-cleaning mindset is the perfect time to wipe that phone clean (not literally!). While your phone is powered off, simply use a microfiber cloth with a bit of antibacterial cleaner on it. Then allow to air dry. (In fact, this should probably be done more than once a year!)

MORE COST-EFFECTIVE:

Getting a deep and thorough spring cleaning done does not mean you have to rush out and by a ton of fancy cleaners and tools. Check out some quick and easy tips on how to save money, while still getting a quality clean!

COST-EFFECTIVE TIP #1 – STREAK-FREE SHINE:

Getting a streak-free shine on your windows and mirrors doesn’t mean you have to rush out and buy those expensive microfiber rags. One of the most effective tools (for both cost and usability) is an old cotton t-shirt. We all have a few lying around! Instead of throwing away those old t-shirts, simply tear a couple of them up and use them, with a mix of vinegar and water, to wipe your mirrors and windows down to a pristine shine!

COST-EFFECTIVE TIP #2 – RENT A STEAMER:

The best way to clean your furniture is, by far, using a steam cleaner. Which, of course, can cost an arm and a leg. The best way to save some money and still get that deep clean is to simply rent the steamer for a fraction of the cost. Most major grocery stores offer a rental service, complete with the soap.

COST-EFFECTIVE TIP #3 – INTERIOR CAR WASH:

Canadian winters take a huge toll on the inside of our cars. Between the slush and our boots and the gravel, the insides of our cars could definitely use a fresh spring cleaning. One option is to head over to one of those thorough car wash places and pay a large price. But doing it yourself is a lot less effort than one might think! With just a little warm water and a good car shampoo, you can easily “spring-ify” the inside of your car, for a fraction of the cost.

MORE FUN:

Spring cleaning might be long and require a lot of effort but it doesn’t have to be boring! Check out some amazing tips on how to make spring cleaning fun!

FUN TIP #1 – CRANK UP THE TUNES:

Open the windows, let the sun shine all the way in, and crank up some tunes! One of the best parts of spring cleaning is the chance to blast some amazing music and dance while you work. You can even just type “spring cleaning” in the search bar of Spotify for some amazingly well-thought out playlists precisely made for this!

FUN TIP #2 – WHAT’S YOUR CLEANING PERSONALITY:

Do you like to clean when you’re angry? Or do you use cleaning as an excuse to procrastinate other work? Or do you hate cleaning with a passion? RealSimple has an adorably fun article to help decode what makes you tick (or clean). Check it out here.

FUN TIP #3 – GET THE WHOLE FAMILY INVOLVED:

The more the merrier, we always say! And that expression definitely holds true when it comes to cleaning! Wake the kiddos, embarrass them by dancing to the tunes of your generation and hand them a cleaning rag! The family that cleans together, stays together!
