Fathers Day (and Mothers Day) are two of the best Sundays of the year. They are a great reminder of what an amazing job our parents do for us. And that goes for all types of parents - step-parents, in-laws, foster parents, parents of fur babies, part-time parents, single parents, and every parent in between! So when Fathers Day roles around, it's time to find some sort of gesture to show dear ol' dad just how grateful we are for everything he does for us.
So, without further ado, here are some of the most unique (and inexpensive) ideas on ways to celebrate dads this coming Sunday. Here are the top gift suggestions, Fathers Day dinner hosting suggestions, and activities:
TOP GIFT SUGGESTIONS
1) PHOTO ALBUM:
Dad might not always show his sentimental side, but no one can resist baby pictures of his own child! Putting together a photo album of your family through the years, including your grandparents, is a great way to show dad how much you care without breaking the bank. You can find some pics of dad when he was young, add some pages about memorable moments your family has had (births, milestone birthdays, vacations, etc..) and have the pictures mounted into an inexpensive keepsake photo album.
People simply love researching where they came from. And the actual research is just as interesting as finding out the results! So if you are looking for a fun, unique gift that will entertain dad for the next few weeks, get him an ancestry kit. He can research your family history and geneology and regale you with stories for weeks to come!
3) WHAT DOES YOUR DAD LIKE?:
There are a myriad of gift suggestions that are unique, cool and inexpensive. But it all boils down to what does your dad like? Does he enjoy a nice cold beer at the end of the day? Get him a frosted beer mug to keep in the freezer. Does your dad love the smell of coffee in the morning? Get him a subscription box of international coffees that arrive in the mail. Does your dad like the wonders of the world? Get him a National Geographic subscription. Whatever your father loves, do a quick research on that particular hobby and see what great gadgets are available!
TOP FATHERS DAY DINNER SUGGESTIONS (ON A BUDGET):
1) BBQ, BABY!:
It may sound cliché but, hey!, that's because it is miam miam! June is officially BBQ season. So fire up the barbie and get cooking for Fathers Day. So while that settles what should be on the menu, how to settle the inexpensive part of the dinner equation? BBQing may be delicious, but it usually involves costly meats, making for a very expensive dinner (especially if you are hosting!). One great, inexpensive BBQ option is hamburgers. You can easily "fancy" them up by adding some fun condiments like flavoured mayonnaise and caramalized onions.
If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times! Potlucks are always the way to go to save some significant money! If you are hosting the dinner for Fathers Day with your siblings, why not divide the costs of the food (and the work in preparing!) by asking everyone to bring a dish. If you opt to make it BYOB, even better! By equally divvying up the dinner responsabilities, your costs are drastically reduced!
3) GO OUT FOR DESSERT:
Instead of focusing on dinner, why not focus on dessert? It's everyone's favorite course anyway! So make dads favorite meal at home and then take dad out for a nice ice cream or chocolate brownie. It is a great way to dine out but cut the bill in MORE than half!
TOP ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS:
1) BECOME A CHILD AGAIN:
364 days of the year, we are adults. But sometimes, on that one obscure day, it is fun to be a kid again. This Fathers Day, offer your dad a full day of no yardwork, no bill paying, no household chores. Instead, invite him to spend the day outside playing street hockey, t-ball, skateboarding (with helmets! Dads are more brittle than they think!) and any other fun, run-and-jump, care-free activity dad used to enjoy. Trust me, it may sound weird, but dad will LOVE it!
2) PICNIC IN THE PARK:
Weather permitting, what better way to spend the day than hanging out outside! Pack up a simple picnic lunch and whisk dad to the nearest open space for an afternoon of lazy relaxing and scrumptious delights. Bring a ball or a frisbee to toss around and you have one of the best Fathers Days a guy could ask for!
3) TAKE IN A MOVIE:
Summer is when all of the blockbusters come out! There are surely a ton of movies dad is dying to see but never has the time! Why not combine your gift and activity into one and get him tickets to the movie theater, complete with tokens for the movie arcade after the film! Buy him a popcorn and a soda and you have a full circle day (dinner, movie and gift!)
No matter how you opt to spend the day with dad, the important thing to remember is that it is all about time and effort. Let dad know how much he means to you.
